King Kong – Movie Review

Friday night my wife and I went to the King Kong. I’ve never seen any of the previous versions so unlike most people the story was actually pretty new to me other then comments I had heard. It is a mighty long movie (think around 3 hours) but surprisingly the story moved along pretty well and I never had that feeling that I just wanted it to end. The special effects were incredible but never so overpowering as to distract from the storyline. It is a love story of sorts and the real power of the movie for me was in the fact that the audience develops some empathy with this monstrous beast.

Now don’t get me wrong. This wasn’t by any means a great movie in my onion, but it was entertaining and well done. Probably my biggest issue with the movie was the acting of Jack Black. While he did kind of fit with his character’s semi-insane personality, I never really fully bought the portrayal but instead kept waiting for him to crack a joke. I suppose some of this could be due to the fact that this is the first serious role I’ve seen him play, but it just bothered me that when I looked at his character I saw someone acting a part instead of the person in the story. In general though the characters well developed and outside of the corny final line, I did enjoy the film and would recommend it.
