The little things...

After discussing the possibilities of our dreams being real in my last post it's time to move on to the lighter topic of my favorite baseball team...The Minnesota Twins.

First I better tell you that I am a die hard fan and was so even in the mid to late 90s when there wasn't really anything to cheer about. They looked and played hopelessly over that streak but like a good armadillo I still kept up with how they were doing. Of course the last 4 years they have actually been fun to watch again and have even received a reputation of doing things the "right way." This includes developing good players in the minors, emphasizing pitching and defense, and being smart running the bases. Unfortunately watching the Twins in 2005 has been a tough pill to swallow.

Maybe the fact that many baseball experts picked them to win the World Series just got my hopes up two high. They do have a superb pitching staff, some decent veteran outfielders and promising group of young players in the infield. For all of that though they pretty much have stunk all year. And what's missing? It's those same little things that made them so much fun to watch the last few years. They aren't moving the runners, getting clutch hits, or being smart on the bases. And defensively they make so many mental errors that they are just asking to loose. Many fans have insisted that one more good hitter could solve their problems but this wouldn't fix the real issues.

Yes it's a tough year to be a Twins fan, but there must be something we can learn from all of this. Maybe it's the importance of the little things...Not just in baseball, but in our everyday lives as well. When we take care of the little things, the bigger ones have a tendency to fall into place as well. Let's do ourselves a favor and not worry about the stuff we can't controls (like getting one more good hitter). There's plenty we can control like our attitude and relationships with the people in our lives. Spend time talking with friends and family...go for a walk and enjoy the sunset. Life is so much more then a baseball season. Don't miss out on it.
